TOPO! Explorer

Overview

The TOPO! Explorer website has a built in search tool that enables you to find place names on the map. This search is powered by the GeoNames Wiki. Which you can register and add place names to should a specific location not be listed. The step-by-step instructions below provide some suggestions for finding place names in TOPO! Explorer.

Step-by-Step

1. Navigate to the Explore Page of TOPO! Explorer

2. Locate the "Find a Place" search box above the map window.

3. Locate the "Type" drop down and select from one of the (7) Types that most closely matches the place you are seeking.

4. Enter the place name in the search box and hit enter.

5. The search results panel will open on the left side of the map window. With a list of matching results. Additionally the results are shown on the map with pushpins.

6. Click on any of the results to see the corresponding location on the map. Additionally you will be provided the coordinate for that place.

Some Tips:

  • When searching for a physical place such as a Mount, Lake, River, etc.. Try your search without the feature part of the name included. For example when searching for "Mt. Rainier" - search just for "Rainier" in the "Mountains and Natural Features" type.
  • Unlike other TOPO! applications you can now search for a street address.
  • Should you not find the place you're looking for - consider adding it to the [GeoNames database]. We'll be updating our database off of this site routinely.
