TOPO! Explorer

Overview

This article provides step-by-step directions on how to share a Trip File you have created with TOPO! Explorer by posting it to the TOPO! Explorer website. This article assumes that you have already created a Trip File.

Step-by-Step

1. Launch the TOPO! Explorer application and login to the site when prompted.

2. Open the Trip File you wish to share.

3. Review the Trip File and ensure it contains the information you want it to.

4. Click the "Share/Save" icon found in "Trip" bucket on the left navigation-bar.

5. The bottom pop-up menu Share/Save Menu will appear. This menu enables you to title, describe, and set map parameters for sharing your trip.

6. Create a Title for your Trip File. Be descriptive and use Keywords, this will help others find the file later. For Example: Yosemite National Park Waterfall Locations

7. Create a Description for your Trip File. Provide as much detail about the file as possible, consider what information would be useful to someone who stumbles across this file on the site. For Example: Contains GPS generated waypoints for all the waterfalls in Yosemite Valley. Also includes photos, locations of trailheads, and suggested places to park or access. Created during my Spring 2008 visit."

8. Select your thumbnail photo. If you have placed more than one photo in your Trip File you can pan through all of the included photos and select one to be your thumbnail. This image will display in the Trip pop-up balloons on the website, and be the first photo on your Trip File page.

9. Next - we'll set up the map parameters. This process will position the map for Trip File visitors (consider this their starting vantage point). You can select the zoom level, map type (aerial, topo, hybrid), and also the center point coordinates. To make this easy - simply zoom in to the maps, pan around to select your preferred center point, and choose between the three map-types. Once you have the best position possible simply click the "Use Current Map Parameters" link - this will adjust the map display fields to match your current view.

10. With the description, title, photo, and parameters set - click the "Share Trip" button. The following step-by-step screen will display the progress of your file being processed and posted to the site. Depending on the size of the file and the amount of content this process can take seconds to several minutes. Four green "checks" means that your file has been successfully posted to the site. Note: it may take a few minutes to reflect this on the website.

11. To see a list of Trip Files that you have posted to the site, click the "My Account" link in the TOPO.COM bucket on the left navigation-bar. Then click the "My Trips" tab. The map window will display only the trips, photos, and videos you have posted to the site.
