TOPO! Explorer

Overview

The TOPO! Explorer desktop application enables the transfer of raster map imagery to any one of the six Magellan Triton GPS devices including the 200, 300, 400, 500, 1500, and 2000 models. TOPO! maps, aerial imagery, hybrid maps, and any combination thereof created using the toggle-slider in TOPO! Explorer can be exported to your GPSr.

This article contains detailed step-by-step instructions for connecting, selecting, exporting and viewing maps with your Triton GPS.

Before completing any of these steps ensure that your Magellan Triton has the most recent Firmware. To do so, launch Magellan's VantagePoint software, connect your Magellan Triton, click the My GPS tab to ensure communication with VantagePoint, then select the Connect tab and the "Update Button" (Blue circle with white arrow). Follow on screen prompts as necessary to update Firmware.


Connecting Your Triton

  1. Ensure VantagePoint is closed.
  2. Launch TOPO! Explorer and Login.
  3. Power on your Triton. In most cases a pop-up will appear :: "Connection Detected - Please Select Mode" :: select "Connect to PC". If this pop-up does not appear, click the Triton's "Menu" button, then "View", the "Settings", then "Connectivity" and choose "Connect to PC" from the drop-down list.
  4. Click the "GPS-Connect" button on the left navigation bar, or the GPS button from the top-tool bar in TOPO! Explorer.
  5. Click the "Automatically Detect" button from the GPS menu at the bottom of the screen. If connection is working properly the Status message should read: "Connected to Magellan Triton GPS Device".

Selecting Maps for Transfer to Triton

  1. Connect your Triton with the TOPO! Explorer application (see above)
  2. Navigate on the Index map to the area you’d like to export by double clicking the map to zoom in.
  3. Click the “Triton Map Export” tab
  4. Define the area you’d like to export by using the export tools.
  • Resizing the “Export” bounding box:

To resize the yellow bounding rectangle, mouse over one of its edges. You’ll see a double sided arrow appear. Simply drag the edge to your desired size. *(If you do not find the edge of the yellow export rectangle then zoom out of the map)

  • Relocating the “Export” bounding box:

To relocate the export area, click on and drag the “anchor” located in the center of the yellow export rectangle.

  1. Create a unique name for your map
  2. Choose whether you want to export both the USGS 24k and 100k, or each level individually from the drop down box.
  3. Select if you would like to export the “TOPO”, “Aerial”, or “Hybrid” map from the drop down box.
  4. After making the above selections, click the “Export Map Now” button.

The Status Message will change from "Map Export in Progress" to "Exporting Map to Triton. Please wait…" When finished, it should read "Successfully Transferred". You’ll also see a map transfer progress bar appear in the upper right hand corner. Once transferred, you can disconnect your Triton.

Note: To export different map types such as Aerials or Hybrids, simply change your map display in TOPO! Explorer using the toggle slider in the upper-right hand corner of your map screen prior to exporting your maps. Whatever is visible will be transferred.


Activating and Viewing Maps on Triton

Once your maps have been successfully transferred to your Triton they must be activated to be viewed.

  1. Disconnect your Triton from your PC.
  2. Click the "Menu", then "View", then "Maps" buttons in order to show a list of maps stored on your Triton. Scroll down to the "Detail Maps" section and locate the map your just transferred by name. To activate - click the square icon box to the left of the map name. You can have only one detail map active at a time. Active maps do not have a red line through their icon box.
  3. To view your maps, return to the map screen on the Triton by pressing the ESC button. Navigate on the map to the general area where your detailed maps are located. You will see a red outlined box displayed on the Triton basemap. This is boundary of your detailed maps. Place your cursor inside this box and zoom in.
